Main Coffee Types
Robusta
• Represents approximately one third of global coffee production.
• Characterised by a strong, full‑bodied profile with marked bitterness and low acidity.
• Primary origins: West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and selected regions in South America.
General profile:
Robusta is a robust, high‑yielding variety, well adapted to lower altitudes and less favourable conditions. It is widely used in espresso blends, instant coffee, and commercial lines where body and crema are key. The cup is typically intense and earthy, with lower aromatic complexity compared to Arabica.
Arabica
• Accounts for about two thirds of world coffee production.
• Known for a softer, sweeter cup with delicate acidity and floral, fruity, or chocolate notes.
• Main origins: South and Central America, East Africa, and selected high‑altitude regions in Asia.
General profile:
Arabica is a more delicate, higher‑value variety, cultivated at higher altitudes under specific agro‑climatic conditions. It is the preferred choice for specialty and premium blends, as well as single‑origin offerings. The cup profile is more balanced and nuanced, with acidity and origin‑driven characteristics that vary significantly by terroir, variety, and processing method.
